SPNTS PROPOSAL
The SPNTS Concept
Solar Powered National Transit Service (SPNTS), developed by Solar Transportation Technologies, Inc., is a proposed transportation infrastructure platform designed specifically for autonomous electric vehicles. It is intended to provide private, on-demand, door-to-door regional and intercity transportation while separating automated vehicles from conventional mixed traffic.
The current conceptual guideway is approximately 37 feet wide and uses three lanes: two directional travel lanes and a reversible center lane for maintenance, incident response, and operational flexibility. Vehicles run on continuous concrete tire-support pads. Concrete separation barriers incorporate recessed, flush-mounted power, communications, control, and steering rails.
A continuous photovoltaic canopy is proposed above the guideway to support renewable energy generation and provide weather protection. Off-line stations allow through vehicles to remain on the mainline, while stations provide passenger access, inspection, staging, fleet service, communications, and distributed traffic management functions.

Funding for SPNTS
SPNTS is to be funded by a combination of public and private sources with small investors providing 85% and the government 5%, with the rest coming from a franchising organization. NTS will be built starting with very high traffic corridors on both the east and west coasts, with separate segments linking metro areas. Revenue from high traffic segments will help build an eventual nationwide network larger than the interstate highway system.
